description: The Montana Transportation Framework program uses a federated approach to combine data from various sources and integrate them into one seamless, standardized, uniformly formatted and attributed layer. Transportation data is a dynamic framework (new, upgraded and retired roads, name changes, new address ranges, etc.) and reflecting changes in statewide GIS is a challenging task. The State Library uses the federated approach for the creation and maintenance of transportation data where each data provider (tribe, federal, state, county, city, private) manage its datasets to suit their business needs and practices. The updated transportation data (features, geometries, attributes) is then forwarded to the State Library where it undergoes standardization and quality control/assurance processes. The framework then gets updated with new data and published online. Using data from local sources assures the best possible coverage across the state and ensures the best available data is centrally available. The Transportation Framework contains roads centerlines, ramps, bridges, railroads, trails and public airport features, along with address ranges and road attributes tables and relationship classes. This metadata document contains detailed descriptions of features in the Framework
